Bonding Considerations

Why these bonding tapes are used:

  • Convenient method of bonding
  • Clean and simple to use
  • Instant adhesion
  • No drying time
  • Move on to the next part of the process
  • User friendly
  • No drilling or damage to substrates
  • No contamination of other components or work surfaces
  • Converted into shapes to match receiving components
  • Consistent adhesion performance
  • Consistent layer/thickness of adhesive
  • No hazardous fumes
  • Encourages Good design - no holes or mechanical fixings

Plus...

  • Can be used on plasticised surfaces
  • Insulation between ali and steel to stop electrolytic corrosion
  • Third hand to bond while another fixing method is used
  • Add second colour to reverse printed graphics
  • Pre-assembly before on site construction

Useful Reminder:

The smoother the surface - the better the bond

Common Problems SOLUTION
1. Contaminated surfaces REMOVE ALL CONTAMINANTS WITH AN IPA WIPE *
2. Distortion or peel Forces AVOID, OR CORRECT THE DESIGN
3. Low temperatures AVOID TEMPS BELOW 10oc OR ALLOW TIME FOR THE BOND TO FULLY ‘WET OUT’
4. Differential thermal movement USE FOAM TAPE OR TECHNIFLEX TO ALLOW FOR ANY MOVEMENT BETWEEN SUBSTRATES
5. Plasticised substrates USE HIGH PERFORMANCE ACRYLIC ADHESIVES
6. Low energy surfaces (PU PE PP Nylon) USE THE WETTER HIGH TACK DS TAPES
7. Shear movement factors USE THE DRYER HIGH SHEAR RESISTANT DS TAPES
8. Rough or uneven surfaces USE A FOAM TO TAKE UP ANY IRREGULARITIES
9. Not enough pressure applied APPLY OVERALL HAND PRESSURE TO SECURE THE TAPE, OR USE A HAND ROLLER OR LAMINATOR

* Sachets of Isopropanol (IPA) wipes are available from Technibond

Simple Script to remember the important adhesion factors

T C P T
T
apply in the correct Temperature conditions

C Clean the surfaces before applying the tape

P apply Pressure to ensure complete surface contact

T allow Time to allow the adhesive fully ‘wet out’

The Thumb Test

Most users tend to judge the tape’s adhesion ability by the ‘thumb test’ - the wetter the feel, the sticker it appears, so surely the better it must bond ?
In fact, the opposite is true. What they are feeling is simply how ‘wet’ the adhesive is.

Think of treacle – very sticky, but too liquid to hold anything in place for more than a few seconds. In contrast, the Technibond PURE ACRYLIC adhesives will hold heavy mirrors and metal components in place indefinitely. Yet, they would be rejected by the standard ‘thumb test’!

Actual performance results prove, when applied correctly, the outstanding ability of these dryer ‘cross-linked’ adhesive products, especially for extended periods in exposed environmental conditions.

Generally all our higher performance products use a ‘cross-linked’ adhesive system to provide a stable, long term secure bond

Adhesion Factors

Tensile
Adhesion
No external forces, other than weight and gravity
Recommended
‘high tack’ products:
HTA, HSHT

Shear Adhesion

Good cohesive properties to resist the slide effect which may happen over time. Temperature may also soften some lower grade adhesives, allowing the slide movement
Recommended
‘high shear’ resistant products :
HSA*, HSHT
* ten year guarantee

Peel
Adhesion
Good adhesion, plus strong carrier to resist the effect of a peel forces.
Recommended
‘high peel’ resistant products:
HPA, Techniflex
