Over the years and several upgrades later, Technibond have been left with a multitude of old, out of date computers and accessories. Disposal of old computers is a real problem, not only because of the restrictions imposed by the WEEE regulations but also because of the data on the hard disk, which may be commercially sensitive or may fall under the Data Protection Act.

Technibond have taken steps to find a way of dealing with both of these problems, that also helps third world countries who may not have the chance to use a computer.

Introducing Computer Aid International – A UK registered charity that aims to reduce poverty to third world countries through practical ICT solutions.  You can recycle anything from computers and peripherals, printers, cartridges and mobile phones. Not only do these old, normally worthless, computers get passed to a worthy cause, but this also helps you, the individual, by freeing up vital office space. Following from these donations around 60 Africans will benefit from each computer alone.

In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 organisations have an obligation to ensure that all confidential data about employee or customers is not disclosed without consent. Computer Aid International is registered in accordance with the requirements of the UK Data Protection Act. They will “wipe” hard disks to internationally recognized standards and assume legal liability under the Act.

Computer Aid International also operate under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive). This is an EU initiative which aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment, by increasing re-use and recycling and reducing the amount of electrical equipment going to landfill. The UK Regulations implementing the WEEE Directive were laid before Parliament on 12th December 2006 and entered into law on 2nd January 2007. The regulations have been in force since July 1st 2007. Computer Aid International assume liability and provide certificates confirming adherence to such UK laws.

Technibond believe this is a really worthy cause and would like to encourage other people to do the same.
